Canon just announced it, so I'm going to compare the Canon 5D Mark IV to the 4-year old 5D Mark III and share whether this is a solid update for photographer
The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV outperforms the Nikon D500 in video capabilities with a score of 91/100 compared to the Nikon’s 70/100. Both cameras share common features such as 4K video resolution and built-in time-lapse functionality. However, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV excels in several aspects which contribute to its higher score.
The Canon 5D Mark III was shot with the Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM ( $500) with an in-camera lens profile. The LEICA M typ 240 was shot with a LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH ( $3,000) with an in-camera lens profile. The Sony A7 was shot with the same LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH, but with no lens profile.

It is funny how often this exact topic pops up. Moving from Canon 5D II, III and IV to the Fuji XT-1, 2, 3 and 4 has been very lucrative for Fuji. I decided to move to Fuji XT-1 in 2013 when it announced - 7 years ago. I had been shooting the 5D III and later got the 5D IV. I shot both system for another 3 years. I had lots of L glass.
However, based purely on the measures of image quality, autofocus performance, dynamic range, and low-light shooting, the Nikon D810 and the Sony A7R II outperformed the Canon 5D Mark IV. That being said, the differences were, by and large, fairly minimal, and for everyday shooting, aren't going to make a huge impact on what you can and cannot
Lastly, the 5D Mark IV has other nice features such as a high-resolution 3.2″ touchscreen LCD, built-in GPS and WiFi + NFC, none of which are offered on the D810 (the LCD on the D810 is not touch-enabled) and it is a tad lighter in comparison. Where the Nikon D810 stands out is in better flash sync speed, wider AE bracketing range, better Canon EOS 5D Mark IV: Performance. With the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV having two processors as opposed to one, and one of these exclusively looking after the camera’s image processing, there will be many who hoped for a big improvement in terms of speed.
